Movie night has a way of being the universal answer to 'what should we do' on cozy nights in. Whether it’s with family, friends, a date, or just a quiet night to unwind, it's a solid go-to.

You pick something to watch, settle in, grab some snacks, and then the night either becomes something you're fully locked into or slowly fades into background noise while everyone relaxes in their own way.

But the thing is, the best movie nights aren't just about what you watch. Let’s not get it twisted…the pick of the night definitely matters. But there's something to be said for being a little more intentional about how you watch it, who you're with, and all the small things that make the night feel more like an experience instead of just pressing play.

These five ideas add a little twist and immersion to your movie nights with your favorite people, and a few can even level up a solo night in!

1. Make the Movie's Menu

What's a typical movie night staple? Some would say the popcorn! Or any other of your favorite snacks. But what if you took the food you see on screen, those mouthwatering dishes you always wish you could try, and brought it into your own living room? (starting in the kitchen of course).

What to do:

  • Pick a movie that has a signature meal or an iconic food moment, then make that the center of your movie night.

  • Think along the lines of:

    • The iconic chocolate cake from Matilda

    • The cheeseburger made for Margot in The Menu

    • Kevin’s delicious room service ice cream sundae in Home Alone 2

    • The signature ratatouille dish from Ratatouille

    • A bundt cake inspired by My Big Fat Greek Wedding

    • The massive oatmeal cream pie in Honey I Shrunk the Kids

    • One of the many interesting lunch meals in The Breakfast Club (although a Cap’n Crunch/Pixy Stix sandwich is quite the preference)

    • Or simply just getting pizza delivered Talladega Nights style

  • Get to cooking! Put on some music (maybe even the soundtrack of the movie you picked), don't forget to taste test, and most of all, make it fun! Cooking it together before the movie starts turns it into part of the experience.

  • Press play, eat, and enjoy! Suddenly, your'e not just watching the movie, you're getting a taste of it too!

It doesn't have to be exact or perfect. Even just picking something that matches the vibe of the movie is enough to add a layer of immersion.

If cooking isn't the move, there's no shame in ordering something inspired by it instead. The point is just to lean into it a little and make the experience fun and tasty!

2. Let the Movie Roulette Wheel Decide

Let's set the scene: you've got your snacks, you're settled in, and now you're ready to decide on the movie.

Ten minutes later... you're still searching, nobody can agree, and the mood is starting to drop.

It's in these decision-fatigue moments where you almost wish a little movie elf would jump out and hand you a solid lineup.

Welp... maybe not a movie elf, but perhaps a Movie Roulette Wheel where we leave our movie-picking fate to the cinema gods. Or, ahem... the Movie Roulette Wheel brought to you by The Connectioneer.

With categories ranging from Cracks You Up to Cover Your Eyes, give the wheel a spin and see what lineup it chooses for you. Click on the tickets to reveal a short synopsis. Land on Director's Pick and let the cinema gods narrow it down to just a single pick! You might discover a new favorite, revisit an old one, or finally give that one movie a fair chance.

And don't worry, if the wheel serves up something you're just not in the mood for, you can always respin. The cinema gods are forgiving.

3. Play Movie Bingo

Turn your movie night into a fun bingo hunt!

Suddenly, everyone in the room is paying very close attention to when the main character embarrassingly trips, when the montage cues, or when there’s that very obvious, slightly shameless product placement that somehow makes it into every film.

It's an immersive experience that brings all eyes to the screen and keeps them there...except for when you're looking down at your bingo card of course...

What to do:

  • After you've settled on a good movie, pick a pre-made bingo card or build your own! The Connectioneer offers Rom-Com, Comedy, or blank template versions ready to play for free!

  • Or go the old school route, grab a sheet of paper, draw some squares, and fill them in with common movie moments or tropes you'd think the movie would have (think: dramatic slow-motion run, public love confession, awkward misunderstanding, villain monologue, etc.)

  • Make sure to read the squares before you press play so you know what to look out for!

  • Keep the card visible at all times!

  • Mark off squares as they happen and claim bragging rights for spotting all the clichés. First to bingo wins or whoever was closest!

To spice things up, take a sip of your beverage of choice each time you cross off a square.

The fun is in the clichés. Your movie night quickly becomes a little more interactive and a lot more suspenseful.

4. Pick a Character and Ride Along

Some movies become a lot more entertaining when you stop watching from the sidelines and start picking sides. Warning: Chaotic conversations are heavy with this one, all in the name of playful, fully committed character immersion.

What to do:

  • Each person picks a character from the movie of choice. Go full free will with it or assign characters out of a hat. Now you're stuck with them until the credits roll.

  • Everything they do, you're on their side for. You hype them up, justify their questionable decisions, excuse their unhinged behavior and experience the entire movie through their perspective.

  • React to what other characters say as if it's happening to you, because at this point, it's all personal.

It becomes surprisingly chaotic when everyone in the room is fully committed to the bit. Peak immersion is key with this one.

Some movie ideas to try this with:

    • Step Brothers - Brennan and Dale make for some hilarious headbutting, but good luck to whoever gets Derek.

    • Mean Girls - Regina defenders are in for some fun, especially when they have to vouch for the Burn Book.

    • Shrek - Imagine having to defend Lord Farquaad's behavior...yikes.

    • Bridesmaids - A Megan stan and a Helen stan in the same room...honestly a good social experiment.

    • Dodgeball - If you're picking White Goodman, just make sure you're sitting nowhere near Peter La Fleur...

Friendships will be tested but whatever you do, don't let them see you sweat. Choose wisely.

5. Ditch the Couch

Hot Take: The setting is equally as important as the movie. Whether it's a few simple touches or a full change of scenery, the right environment (and snacks) can make any movie night hit different.

Some ideas:

  • Take it to the grocery store: Divide and conquer. Split up and assign each person a category: snacks, drinks, dessert and something easy for the main (think ramen, frozen pizza, Lunchables, whatever works). Meet back up at the end, lay out the feast at home, and press play. Negotiation allowed.

  • Living room picnic: Move the coffee table, set up blankets and pillows on the floor, prepare the snacks and create a cozy home theater in your own living room. Popcorn and soda mandatory.

  • Trunk Cinema: Drive to a scenic spot, set a blanket in the trunk, bring your screen of choice and make it a drive-in movie night!

  • S'mores under the stars: Set up the movie outside on a laptop, tablet, or projector, set out some lawn chairs, a blanket, and prepare s'mores even if that means in the microwave. Sometimes it's just about working with what you got.

  • Check your area: Look for free outdoor movie screenings, dine-in theaters, or drive-ins near you and make a full night out of it. You might be surprised what's around.

Feel free to mix and match these ideas with others on this list for a night that really delivers.

Whether you're crossing off bingo squares, defending Lord Farquaad, or watching from the trunk of a car, movie night will never look the same again. Because movie night deserves a plot twist too.
